Why Bell Tents Are Made for Family Camping

Bell tents give families more room, an easier pitch and a comfier night than most tents, and they make the trip feel special. If you've ever spent a camping holiday crouched in a nylon dome, tripping over bags and refereeing who sleeps next to the zip, this one's for you.

The round, single-pole canvas tent has gone from festival favourite to family staple, and it's easy to see why. Here are five reasons it keeps winning parents over.

1. Room for the whole crew

A bell tent feels more like a room than a tent. The round floor and tall centre pole mean no crouching to get dressed and no elbows in faces at bedtime.

A typical 5m bell tent sleeps four to six people comfortably, with around 3m of headroom at the centre, so even the tallest grown-up can stand up straight. Because the floor is a full circle, you can lay beds around the edge like spokes of a wheel and still have space in the middle for a play corner, the bags and a muddy-boots zone by the door.

2. Pitched before the kids get bored

There's no colour-coded pole puzzle to solve at dusk. A bell tent has one centre pole, one A-frame at the door and a ring of pegs, and once you've done it a couple of times it goes up in three simple steps:

  1. Peg out the sewn-in groundsheet so the tent sits in a neat circle.
  2. Crawl inside and raise the centre pole and the door A-frame.
  3. Peg and tension the guy ropes all the way round.

Step three is a great job for little helpers. Handing children the mallet and a bag of pegs keeps them busy, and they'll be proud of the tent they helped build.

3. Cotton canvas sleeps better

Most bell tents are made from cotton canvas rather than nylon or polyester, and that makes a real difference to how well everyone sleeps.

  • Cooler days. Canvas doesn't trap heat like a greenhouse, so the tent stays bearable on sunny afternoons and you avoid the 5am wake-up in a sweltering tent.
  • Cosier nights. The thicker fabric holds warmth better once the sun goes down.
  • Less condensation. Canvas breathes, so you're far less likely to wake up to drips and damp sleeping bags.
  • Softer rain. A shower sounds like a gentle patter on canvas rather than a drum solo, which helps light sleepers drift off.

4. Roll up the walls, let the outside in

Most bell tents have sidewalls that zip or roll up. On a warm day, that turns the tent into a shady den with a breeze running through it.

It's the perfect spot for snacks, board games and afternoon naps, and you can keep an eye on the kids playing outside without leaving the shade. When the weather turns, simply roll the walls back down.

5. Pure camping magic for kids

This is the one children notice first. Hang fairy lights from the centre pole, string bunting over the door and lay out rugs and cushions, and make it a magical trip.

It feels like something out of a storybook, and that's the part they'll remember long after the trip. Bedtime stories by lantern light hit differently in a bell tent.

Choosing the right size

For most families of four, a 5m bell tent hits the sweet spot between space and weight. Sizes and heights vary by brand, so treat these as rough guides and check the maker's specs.

A few tips before your first trip:

  • Season it first. Pitch a new tent in the garden and soak it with a hose or let it rain. The cotton threads swell and tighten, which makes it properly waterproof.
  • Always pack it dry. Damp canvas can grow mildew in days. If you have to pack up wet, open it out to dry as soon as you get home.
  • Bring rugs and cushions. They make the floor warmer, softer and much more like home.
